Acne has been the bane of teenagers for generations, affecting more than half of them from the onset of puberty until their early twenties, although it can affect adults of any age, especially pregnant women. Caused by inflammation of the sebaceous glands (which produce oil to lubricate the skin) located by each hair follicle on the body. Lesions are generally found on the face, neck, chest, shoulders and even the top of the head.

Although there is no exact cause, there are several factors that can contribute to its development. These include a change in hormones, oily skin, heredity as well as stress and allergies and even oral contraceptives.

Poor eating habits are another major cause, especially the consumption of a lot of junk food containing high amounts of starch and sugar, as well as fried and fatty foods. In addition, chronic constipation can cause a buildup of toxic matter in the bloodstream and cause the body to look for other ways to eliminate waste including pushing it out the pores.

General cures include the use of both over-the-counter and prescription antibiotic creams as well as oral medications. However, since they may also kill beneficial bacteria needed to aid digestion, it is often recommended that anyone taking these medications eat plenty of yogurts to counterbalance their affects, although they should reduce their intake of other dairy products since the fat content in them may make the acne worse.

Other foods to avoid include those high in caffeine, eggs, chocolate, fish, poultry, red meat, sugar and wheat.

Those suffering from acne should also eat more raw vegetables and fresh fruits, and may find that ingesting herbs such as cayenne, burdock root, Echinacea, red clover and dandelion roots (all readily available in any health food stores) can help improve their conditions. Other suggested nutrients include chromium, which aids in reducing skin infections, primrose oil, zinc gluconate, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin B complex with extra B6 and pantothenic acid and cod liver oil. 3,000-5,000mg of vitamin C with bioflavonoid should also be taken each day. Lecithin can also help the body absorb essential fatty acids.

Simple homemade acne treatments include patting the affected areas down with lemon juice three times a day as using a steam sauna on the face made with strawberry leaves, lavender or red clover. Lavender is especially good since it kills germs and has been shown to stimulate new cell growth.

Additional home treatments that have also been effective include rubbing the face and neck with chopped up cucumber for about twenty minutes to prevent pimples; wearing a facemask made from a paste with fenugreek leaves overnight; using mint juice as a face wash before bedtime; and in extreme cases rubbing raw garlic over the acne several times a day to clear the skin of the toughest pimples.

Keep the skin free from oil. Girls should make sure that that they only use water based makeup. Sufferers should shower frequently, and those with oily hair should shampoo daily.
