How to remove black mold?

The kitchen and bathroom are the two rooms in the house that carry the most germs.  Toilet germs can travel a few hundred feet after flushing.  If there is no window in the bathroom, the germs tend to linger longer while moisture is trapped in the air.  Bathroom fans circulate the air, but do not generate fresh air from outside.  If the bathtub and shower are not cleaned on a regular basis, or bathroom leaks are neglected black mold can become a problem.  Black mold removal is not the same as removing mildew and soap scum.  Black mold can eventually cause serious illness in family members and staff if the problem is in a commercial building.

Black Mold Removal

Bleach is a known remedy for black mold removal.  Any disinfectant will help to eliminate the problem however.  The application of a disinfectant will control bathroom mold as long as it is applied frequently to the areas of potential growth.  Once the mold gets behind dry wall it is harder to control the moisture.  Consequently, a professional may have to be called to service the problem.

A moderate bathroom mold problem can be addressed by someone in the home as long as the source of the moisture is addressed first.  Simple solutions like replacing washers around the spigots will solve minor leaks thus reducing the moisture.  Once the moisture issue has been addressed clean up can begin.

This type of cleanup is not recommended for the allergy or asthma sufferer in the home.  Mold spores travel once disturbed.  They attach themselves to dust particles and become airborne as dust is circulated.  The bathroom should be closed and a dust mask worn if possible.  It is also it is advised to wear rubber gloves.

1.  Use a soapy disinfectant solution to make scrubbing easier.

2.  After cleanup dry the area where the mold spores were growing to prevent the moist environment from generating new growth.

3.  Dispose of any rugs or porous objects that were contaminated.  Some may be cleaned in a disinfectant cleaning solution and salvaged.

4.  Use a dehumidifier, an air purifier or a fan to continue to reduce moisture and dry the area treated.

It is important not to contaminate the rest of the house with mold spores.  Sealing exposed materials in a bag and removing clothing in the same room after cleanup will prevent transfer to other rooms in the house.  If professional help is required, making sure they are certified and bonded will ensure a job done properly.

Black Mold Prevention Tips

To prevent mold problems from reoccurring, keep the area dry.  This is the most effective way.  Other ways to keep the area mold free is to:

1. Disinfect the tub and toilet regularly.

2. If no windows are in the bathroom use the fan more frequently, or invest in an air purifier, or extra fan.

3. Address leaks as soon as they are discovered.

4. Avoid leaving wet towels and wash cloths along baseboards and other bathroom surfaces.

I always keep a bottle of white vinegar in my shower room. Spray it on the shower curtain, tiles, walls, floor and bathtub can help remove soap scum and body oil that might left on these areas. By reducing the primary food source to mold, we can cut down the mold problem.
