Decorating with corbels.

Corbels are architectural supports that were first used in the medieval times on buildings.  Originally, these architectural supports were used on the outside of the buildings to support the  weight of a balcony or roof.  These were very ornate and highly detailed.  The early ones were carved from stone. Today we use these brackets as decoration in both commercial buildings and our homes.

Choosing a style.

These decorative pieces come in a variety of styles and materials.  Some are machine made, some are hand carved, and some are formed.  Decorators use these to accentuate anything we want to draw attention to. They are used outside and inside.  Outside, they can go under the eaves to draw attention to the roof line or on the porch to add interest and detail.  Inside the home we can use them under our countertops to catch the eye.  We can mount them against the ceiling or against a beam for contrast. They are used to highlight the mantle over the fireplace.  We  use them to decorate a shelf. We place them in around the room to hold lamps, lights or accessories where we want these items.  Wooden brackets can be used with these to create an interesting effect.

These decorative brackets are a nice addition to the room and call attention to the details of the decor. By carefully selecting the size, shape, and design they will showcase what they intend to.  They can be painted the same color as the wall or ceiling, be natural wood or a stained wood or a bright, bold color, whatever we want for the effect we create.

The original corbels were very ornate with fine details and a variety of designs. We can get the same kind of detail today. Wood corbels can be large or small, very ornate or simpler, and come in almost every wood available.  These can be special ordered from many manufactures to match or create a unique style.  Other materials available include plaster, marble and plastic in many faux finishes.

Installing corbels.

There are a number of ways to install these. Some come with a metal plate to be attached to the wall. The metal plate is screwed into the wall in the location you want.  Then the covering slips on and you have installed your creation.

The most common method of attachment is adhesive caulk. You make a mark on the wall where you want the unit mounted.  The adhesive caulk is spread on the back of the unit.  The decorative bracket is firmly pushed against the wall. If you are installing a large bracket, you can carefully nail the bracket to the wall with a couple of finishing nails.  Once the adhesive dries you remove the finishing nails.

As a finishing touch, you take a little caulk and outline the bracket, making it look like it is part of the wall.

These wonderful versatile brackets can be used almost anywhere for almost any reason. The variety is endless; you will find some that will enhance any decor you have.
