Before discussing the value of high density foam, it is important to understand foam's structure and some basic terms.

Foam is made up of a network of material in a similar shape to a honeycomb. There are two major types of foam: FPF (flexible polyurethane foams) and rigid. Flexible foam is primarily used for cushioning, whereas rigid foam is primarily used in buildings, for example in building panels.

In order to be considered flexible foam, foam must be able to stand up to the weight of a person or object without developing a depression in the center.
