Exotic Pets? Exotic Animals? Are you looking to buy any type of exotic animal, such as a chimpanzee or a tortoise in your house? Then read this article!

Did you know that you can own Ferrets, Chameleons, Hedgehogs and tons of other exotic pets?

Which Exotic Pets For Sale Can I Own?

Every state has different laws and concerns for exotic pet ownership. This article will tell you some animals you can own, and give you resources for finding the animals. Here is a selection of some exotic pets you can own.

Amazing huh? In some places, you can even get larger animals! So the question now is, how do you get your hands on these animals?

Check out this vid for some cool animals.

Laws About Owning A Pet, Wild and Exotic

There are many different laws about owning exotic pets---some states allow you to own exotic pets easily, while some others make it illegal to own anything more interesting than a cat or dog!

There are generally four tiers of state law for owning an exotic pet.

  1. 18 states have strong laws against exotic animal ownership: Alaska, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wyoming.
  2. 10 states have a partial ban against owning exotic animals (some are allowed, some are not): Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Virginia
  3. 13 states require the the owner to get a license or permit from the state before owning the exotic animal: Arizona, Delaware, Indiana, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas
  4. 9 states have no license or permit requirements: Arizona, Delaware, Indiana, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas

So which state are you in? Me, for example, in California, means that I can't even own a pet ferret, much less a pet chimpanzee! However, I know a person from Oregon who owns a pet wolf!

You can see a list of state laws about exotic pet ownership here: http://www.bornfreeusa.org/b4a2_exotic_animals_summary.php

How do I find out if my Wild Pet is legal in my state?

To be sure that your pet is legal, you should follow these steps.

  1. Look up the state laws here. - Some states may mention your chosen animal as illegal. Be sure before wasting your time making phone calls.
  2. Research the relevant government offices to call - Using Google or the yellow pages, look up the phone number of your city hall and county office. Call and see if there is any local government legislation.
  3. If they can't tell you, look up your state's wildlife agency - Call your state wildlife authority. They should be able to help you or direct you to the right agency.
  4. Consider calling your local humane society - They might have some info for you.

Make sure that your pet is legal in your state before buying it!

It has always driven me nuts that you can't own a ferret in California, I can't understand the ridiculous reasoning for it. By the way your video link is not there.

Like this hub, I am toying with the idea of owning a wolf dog hybrid in the future - in fact I wrote a whole article on it. Thanks for the hub hubberzero.

dylan 2 years ago

you can't own a ferret because they can escape from almost ANYTHING and they bite people alot

AJ 2 years ago

Dylan you're such an idiot. There are cages that they cannot escape from and not all ferrets bite! I had 3 wonderful ferrets that my 2yr old could hold without even a scratch. In fact, I had them since she was an infant. Unfortunately my husband lost his job and we where unable to give them proper care. Also, if ferrets do escape their homes, they are more likely to die from the elements than go on a biting rampage.

If you get bit by your own exotic animal I don't feel sorry for you. They are only doing what comes naturally to them, they are wild and should stay that way. People can't even control their domestic dogs let alone a wild animal. I will never own a wild animal for my own selfish reasons.

Ben Dover 18 months ago

Sheesh, reading some of these posts is absolutely depressing. It's hard to imagine some of you people owning and taking care of yourself, let alone an exotic pet. If your writing skills, e.g., grammar/spelling and context are any indication of the most basic intelligence, you're screwed.

REALLY 17 months ago

REALLY!! YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE AND THERE GRAMMER,SPELLING AND SUCH, YOU SHOULD BE MORE CONCERND ABOUT YOUR NAME(BENDOVER) THINK ABOUT IT

Pangie 17 months ago

Lol, Ben, you are so right.

I live in Oregon and I always thought you could own pretty much any exotic animal but then i clicked the link containing the laws pertaining to and it says its forbidden. what the hell?

Mason 13 months ago

I live in California and sometimes I can't stand the laws regarding the ownership of exotic animals. I completely understand it's there to protect the animals and environment and such from certain people ineligible to care for a monkey, but I see nothing wrong with making it at least possible for the people who have lived with and raised animals all their lives to legally obtain exotic pets. also any breeders around california or the states surrounding should post their info up on sites like this. they would get good business from people like myself.

DAMION 13 months ago

seeking capuchin monkey I live in Texas Only finding scams HELP

Bev  11 months ago

Wild animals deserve to be left IN the wild! To use the term 'pet' is very misleading. You cannot have a 'pet' panther, snake, etc. It infuriates me that anyone promotes the ownership of any dangerous, undomesticated animal! You are selfish if you think these creatures would prefer being caged in your house or backyard as opposed to living in their NATURAL environment! If you want a 'pet' get a cat, dog, gerbil, or any number of non-wild animals! Grrrrrrrr @ the lot of you!

Akasha 10 months ago

Chill dude its not like were abusing the thing...some of us want to learn more about them. I'm in college learning about brazilian animals because i got a job request from an organization in the rain forest and i was asked to help with the animals there. so relax!

Chupacabra 10 months ago

Okay well 1. The reason ferrets are illegal in California is because on a random happening an owner left her baby and ferret in the same room unoccupied for a reasonable amount of time and the ferret knawed off the baby's face. Google it. It didn't kill the baby but she is extremely physically damaged and will remain that way. And 2. Dede, you are too. Ferrets are not exotic pets just because California has a law against them. I'm almost positive they are legal in all other states.

-Common sense.

Ally  10 months ago

I live in tennessee and as far as im aware you dont need a permit to own any exotics unless they are native to the state
