67Every one that loves wood working whether they do it for a living or just for a hobby knows that there is nothing better than the look of finished wood. When a project comes to an end there is no better felling then watching the wood’s grain stand out with vibrant detail. Finished carpentry adds style to any room that it is placed in. Although if you are not the type of person that loves working by hand, you may just want to buy a piece of already finished carpentry. Regardless the piece is purchased with some kind of finish already applied or your hand crafted piece that needs finish to tie it all together. Although no finish is perfect, some finishes will only need the minimal matince to keep them looking good as new. Below are two of the most commonly used types of finishes for in and around the household.
Latex Based Finish
Latex based finish is good for exterior, though it is not excluded from indoor use. Finishes with a latex base, have a fairly fast drying time, thus making it a good finish for redoing mailbox posts, wooden columns, porch swings, or your Childs play house. Thanks to latex finish’s constancy it only takes one to two coats to bring back the beauty of the woods natural grain. This added with its fast drying time allows you do in a single afternoon, where it could have taken a period of several day, even longer if the weather was not on your side, that it would off with an oil based product. Latex based products also add very good weather protection to you outdoor furniture.
Also latex based finishes help fight of unintended stains. One of the few things that can ruin a good finish on your wooden piece is a sap stain that is caused from the woods natural sap seeping out from under the stain, causing the finish to bubble and or crack. With latex’s ability to seal off the pores in the wood it can make the piece not only last longer, but helps it keep its natural beauty as well. Not to mention it can fight off unnatural stains as well thus allowing your outside furnishings and other wooden objects looking good for some time to come.
Shellac Based Finish
You may be looking for a more friendly interior finish, Shellac finish would be a good choice. It comes in a wide verity of wood types as well as shads of darkness. Not to mention it has the ability to grip smooth and slippery surfaces. It is also good finish to use when the object that is being finished, is going to be placed on a hard wood floor or has a glass top. Also it works very well when used on wood shelf brackets, which may be in a glass show case or cabinet. In addition to that is it also has the ability to protect against a wide area of stains that can commonly occur around the house.
