Today, cushion pads can add a touch of color and elegance to a set of patio furniture. Still, a homeowner with a furnished patio did not always enjoy the opportunity to select a cushion pad from a variety of lovely and soft, cushioning seat covers...

In fact, some forty five years ago, one particular glider cushion was a rather hard, white leather cushion, a cushion that held the bright design of a bee. That cushion was a promotional item, an item offered by Bumble Bee Tuna. At least one family in the Philadelphia area used several such cushions on the hard wooden seats of their patio furniture.

The Chemistry of Outdoor Cushion Pads

Since the appearance of that crazy white cushion, chemists have been busy in the laboratory, working hard on the development of materials that can withstand exposure to both high and low temperatures. At the same time, they have searched for materials that respond well to repeated washing. Chemical research paved the way for the introduction of acrylic and flex linen cushions.

Today, some of the patios in the most elegant homes contain chairs with either acrylic or flex linen cushions. Those cushions come in a variety of different colors. Those cushions hold up well, even after undergoing a long series of “spins” in a washer and dryer.

So, can chemists now devote their time to research in another area? No, chemists continue to examine the materials that appear able to insure both durability and softness in an outdoor cushion. Today, a growing number of homeowners want to buy some “environmentally friendly” furniture accessories. The demand for such accessories has fueled the creation of alternative cushion making materials.

What’s Inside Our Present Day Outdoor Cushion Pads?

Today, a consumer looking for an environmentally friendly pad does not stop with an examination of the material in the pad cover. That consumer also wants to know exactly what material insures the cushiony softness of that chair pad. Today manufactures fill their “green” pads with two different materials.

One of those materials is soy based stuffing. The second is plant based polyfoam. Both of those materials maintain their functionality in changing weather conditions. Both of those materials work well as a soft firm support for an attractive pad cover. Cotton, acrylic and flex linen are the textiles found most often in the covers that go on chair pads, especially pads that the buyer intends to place in an outdoor setting. Some of those covers are decorated with buttons or shells. Such decorations add a bit of texture to the décor on a well furnished patio. Those pad covers come in a variety of colors, but not in any gaudy colors. The hues used on pads that feel the impact of the sun’s rays normally resemble the green, tan and mustard colors that one can find in nature. While not “bold and bright,” those colors still add to the beauty of a soft and comfortable cushion, including one that is supposed to dress up a terrace or patio.
