Can I have one of those elegant iron stairs?

Yes, you can. There are many manufacturers that make beautiful and exotic iron stairs. These can be simple or they can be ornate. These stairs can be used inside the home or on the outside.  Commercial and industrial buildings use these also as a way to conserve space and for looks.  These staircases can be custom designed with ornate details and designer railings at the top to fill any need. They are shipped as a unit and are easy to install.

Why would I want one of these?

Many people buy these for two reasons. One reason is the look; it may be the elegant look the wood spiral stairs add to the living room or the classy look the iron stairs add in the hallway.  Forged iron staircases are very popular with people who have Victorian homes. These stairs need more texture and detail in the staircases to enhance the setting.  Custom made stairs can provide whatever details the customer wants. The homeowner gets to show his or her creativity and is rewarded by the appreciation of the guests.

The other reason is to conserve valuable space.  The beauty and desirability of iron stairs overwhelmed people: no one realizes that this was a space saving addition.   Yet the spiral staircase requires a lot less room for the stairs and the open design allow light and movement.  This is a wise investment with a long lasting benefit.

How do I order my custom outdoor spiral staircase?

Manufacturers are easy to find.  They advertise in many building magazines and on the Internet.  Once you find a manufacturer, you fill out an order form.  You order the size   you need.  This is the height of the finished floor to floor. The second measurement is the diameter of the staircase. How wide will it be? With that measurement, the manufacturer can accurately build you your custom staircase.

You have a choice of classic steel, forged iron, aluminum or galvanized steel for materials.  If the staircase will be covered or protected, you could choose solid wood or wood treads. Galvanized steel stairs stand the test of time, wear and exposure, especially in coastal communities. Aluminum staircases have a powder coated finish that can be any color you want.

From here you can customize the design of the stair treads and railing.  There are choices to be made in the tread styles, tread coverings, tread sleeves (these are the spacing of the stair treads), balusters, handrails and well enclosure rails (the railing that protects people from falling down the stair well at the top of the stair case).  The manufacturer will provide images and descriptions to make all this easy for you.
