Rumors of contractors who never finish a construction job or those who do finish the job but do it in a mediocre way that end up having repair charges costing more than the original payment are true to some out there. There are remodeling contractors that are like that and it’s a fact. So how do you avoid recruiting the wrong remodeling contractor?

First off, make a decision on what kind of contractor do you want to have. Will you be at the construction site and personally supervise the work? And if so, you can hire a good remodeling contractor to do the job. Just keep in mind that when you hire this contractor you become the employer and that it is you who controls the site and it is you who will make the ultimate decisions about the entire project. Depending on the rules and regulations of your city, you may also be having some legal duties to observe and you can be responsible if the person experiences some accident on the job.

Asking around from people you know who have been satisfied with the work they have done can be a good way in choosing a good remodeling contractor. Most of the time, these contractors build on reputation and a good reputation can come a long way. Ask around friends and more importantly ask the important questions like:

  • Was the job successfully completed?
  • Did the contractor showed where he or she was supposed to be or did he or she just attend the meeting and show up a few days later?
  • Was the contractor called for being late during his previous projects?
  • Was the contractor be easily contacted if there are questions about the project?
  • How long did the job take to complete?

Here are other questions you need to ask to the remodeling contractor:

  • Are you a licensed contractor? Some states require remodeling contractors and even subcontractors to be registered or licensed. Be sure that your contractor is duly licensed. And since anyone can tell you that they are licensed, ask for the license or have a copy of them to your file. Do not forget to check the expiration date of the license.
  • Is there a guarantee of the work done? Your contractor should provide you with a guarantee of the work he has done for at least one year from the completion date. The contractor should also have warranties with the materials used for the project if it can be done.
  • Who will oversee the job? Make sure that the contactor and his foreman is on the project site when the work is currently being done and their work should be performed well even they are only sub-contractors. This erases doubts about having to go through check-ups on the job done every now and then.

How do they handle the aftermath? As we all know construction is a dirty business. Ask the contractor if he is able to do away with the mess that comes with the job. Make sure the contractor agrees with cleaning up after the day is done.
