Roof Ladder, Roof repair, Timber cladding
58Fixing up the old house.
Today is the day you start to repair your house. You are going to fix the spot on the roof that leaks and you are going to love the timber siding on the exterior walls. It is about time that you got started. You did your research, bought all the materials you needed and had them delivered to site. The crew is here and ready to start.
Roof repair.
The roofing crew brought their equipment including a roof ladder. It looks like a regular aluminum ladder except for the ridge hook of a solid flat bar at one end. The ladder rungs are round and heavily ribbed for great traction. The roof ladder is an extension ladder with rubber covered bearer bars which hold the ladder off the roof.
The aluminum ladder looks light weight and easy for the crew to move into position. It hooks securely over the peak of the roof, giving the roofing crew support and safety while they are replacing the shingles by the fireplace.
Timber cladding.
Wood is the most popular siding material today. Wood is an environmentally friendly product: it is renewable. Trees are constantly growing. When old trees are harvested, young trees grow better. Wood is a good insulator. Probably the best thing about it is that it the end of its life it can be recycled without harming the environment.
You can buy wood that was grown locally or wood that is imported. If you buy local wood you are supporting the local economy and helping to reduce the carbon emissions caused by the transportation of imports. You purchased your new cladding from one of the timber merchants. You checked the different species of wood and ordered one that was reasonably priced and has the ability to last a long time on your house.
Some of the considerations you weighted were green lumber verses dried lumber. Dried lumber has been through a drying process in a kiln and will not shrink much. Green lumber has not been dried or aged and will shrink more. However, green lumber is cheaper. You looked at the different edges on the lumber and chose one you liked. The most common edges were square cut, feather edge and waney edge.
When the cladding crew arrives, the lumber will go up quickly. You discussed the length of the boards with the installing contractor and followed his recommendations. You ordered steel nails in the right length, which is two and one half times the thickness of the board. The installers should be finished tomorrow. The installation contractor warned you about the hardwoods and dense softwoods that require the nail holes to be drilled before the nails were hammered in. The contractor said this process would take longer and cost a bit more money.
By taking care of your house, your house will last a long time and shelter you well. With a simple roof repair, made safe by the roof ladder, and new cladding on the walls, the house looks good, too.
