Introduction

Home repair takes a number of forms and requires a number of different tools. The hardest place to reach is the roof and the tool used to reach it is the roof ladder. A roof ladder is basically straight with a pair of hooks on one end that slip over the roof's peak. There are wooden ladders as well as those made from metal. A person does not require a specially made ladder; there are hooks that can be attached to a regular ladder to convert it into a roof ladder. Of course, to properly use one, you require the use of another ladder to get up to the level of the roof. Once a person is up there, then any number of repairs may be made.

Inspection

One of the more mundane uses for roof ladders is to inspect roofs. It is a good idea to inspect roofs at least once a year, usually more in areas of constant inclement weather. Mold is the usual attacker, and can cause an untreated wooden roof to rot away, creating potential water damage inside the house. However, even tile roofs can suffer if the weather turns especially nasty; hail storms and hurricanes can cause severe damage that needs immediate repair. Unlike mold, weather can quickly cause holes in the roof, which can create serious water damage in a short amount of time. A roof ladder can allow for a thorough examination, possibly catching issues that a more general inspection would miss; for example, the inspector can look under tiles, prodding and prying areas to see how thorough the damage is.

Repair & Installation

Obviously, if there is damage then there needs to be a way to repair it. Roofs have a special problem compared to most home repairs: You need to get the materials to the site. It sounds basic, but when the area you are repairing is ten or more feet above the ground, it can get interesting. Not only do you need to get it up there, but you also need to make sure that you have enough with you so that you do not need to keep going up and down. Add a stand to the roof ladder, and you have a way to limit the number of trips that you need to take while making repairs, allowing you to put that saved energy into getting the job done quicker and allowing you to be more alert (and ergo safer) while doing it.

Necessity

Roof ladders are thus a necessary part of every handyman's toolbox, even if he is only using the clamps. Combine with a wood ladder and a metal ladder, the handyman is able to get to a number of locations and inspect them that he would not be able to under most circumstances. Better yet, if used widely, he is also able to do so more safely, keeping him out of emergency rooms and online videos. Obviously make sure that whichever tool you choose is of the highest quality, and do not be afraid to spend more for that quality, but just make sure that you have the right tools. The right tools always make the difference between a great job and a dangerous one.
